Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,485 pedestrians were fatally struck by vehicles in 2021, the highest number in 40 years.

Speeding was responsible for 8.6% of pedestrian fatalities in 2020, up from 7.2% in 2019. Pedestrian safety is strongly dependent on speed. The probability of a pedestrian being killed increases exponentially with vehicle speed, from 10% at 23 mph to 90% at 58 mph.

Pedestrians are almost always seriously injured when they are hit by a car. Pedestrians involved in car-pedestrian incidents are more likely to sustain serious injuries.

One of the leading causes of pedestrian injuries and deaths is failure to yield to pedestrians or abrupt braking.

Pedestrians should always walk on the sidewalks, avoid drinking and using drugs, and use caution when crossing parking lots or driveways. As a result, they will be less likely to sustain injuries in these confrontations.
