Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
According to the NHTSA, there were more than 5.2 million police-reported car accidents in the United States in 2020. Thirty percent of such crashes (1.6 million) resulted in injuries, while less than 1% (35,766) resulted in deaths.
Between 2019 and 2020, fatal crashes rose by 6.8 percent, climbing to 1.34 deaths per 100 million cars traveled in 2020. The injury rate decreased by 6.0 percent between 2019 and 2020, resulting in 79 injuries per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
Most traffic accidents resulted in fatalities for motorists (67%), passengers (24%), motorcyclists (4%), pedestrians (3%), and pedal cyclists (2%).
A multiple-vehicle collision occurs when three or more drivers are involved in a chain of events. Up to six cars may become trapped in the wreckage after an accident.
As opposed to traffic collisions, multi-vehicle crashes usually cause injuries, fatalities, and property damage. A loss of control or poor situational awareness can result in harm to those nearby. Such collisions are more likely to occur in most cases.
