Bicycle Crash Statistics

The roads in America are not safe for cyclists. More people die and get hurt in traffic accidents in the United States than in most other countries. Early estimates from the NHTSA say that 846 cyclists died in car accidents in the U.S. in 2019. Bicycle safety is more important than ever because more people are riding bikes to get in shape, save money on gas, to work, or just for fun.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), cyclist deaths hit a record low of 621 in 2010. However, by 2016, the number of pedal cyclist deaths, which includes riders of two-wheeled, non-motorized vehicles, tricycles, and unicycles, had risen by 35% to a high of 840.

If you’re a cyclist in an accident, your health is the most important thing to consider. Get checked out immediately by your doctor and take part in any treatments they suggest. Also, make sure you go to all your follow-up appointments and keep all the records you get.

Make a detailed statement about the accident as soon as possible, while the details are still fresh in your mind. This statement will be helpful for any legal advice you get and any claims you make. Keep a journal of your recovery and how your injuries affect you daily as you move forward.

If you use social media often, you might want to stop while your accident case is going on. Insurance companies look into every claim they get, and they may look at your social media accounts to see if you say anything that makes it sound like your injuries aren’t as bad as you say.

For example, a picture of you going out to dinner with friends a few months after your accident could be used as proof to support a lower settlement offer. Because of this, the safest thing to do after an accident is to stay away from social media.
