Statistics on Elder Abuse

Unfortunately, older people are frequently vulnerable to financial exploitation in various ways. Family members, caregivers, friends, and fiduciaries may mistreat older people. Any elderly person who has been the victim of financial exploitation should seek legal counsel from a reputable California elder financial abuse lawyer.

The elderly (defined as anyone older than 65) and dependent adults are legally protected from various forms of neglect and physical abuse under California Welfare and Institutions Code Section 15600.

According to the California Department of Finance, between 2010 and 2030, the state’s population of residents over 65—or simply older people who will probably need nursing homes and long-term care—will nearly double.

Around 1,300 licensed nursing homes in California are home to 110,000 residents. In roughly 7,500 approved residential care facilities, close to 150,000 people live. It’s estimated that more than 150,000 people reside in unregistered assisted living facilities where they receive subpar care.

Sadly, senior citizens are not always given the respect they merit. Due to their advanced age, criminals see an opportunity to exploit them through schemes and fraud.

Standard elder abuse techniques include deceiving an older person into buying a product, tricking them into thinking they have won a big prize, or pretending to be their primary caregiver to enter their home illegally.
