Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
Although multiple-vehicle collisions are not common, when they do happen, the number of people who die or are injured and the amount of property that is destroyed is shocking.
One type of automobile accident is a collision involving multiple vehicles. A collision involving three or more vehicles crashing is frequently the result of a “chain-reaction” incident, in which a car crashes into another, possibly causing it to crash into more cars on the road.
Thousands of people die or suffer injuries each year on the nation’s highways. The report claims that 33,654 people were killed in fatal car accidents last year. The Fatality Analysis System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation recorded 36,560 fatalities in 2018.
One-fourth of all traffic fatalities occur as a result of multi-vehicle collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 13,000 people perish in these collisions every year (NHTSA).
These collisions frequently occur on highways where dozens of cars are traveling side by side at high speeds. Because of this, many motorists approaching an accident find it challenging to stop at a safe distance, which leads to collisions with other cars in front of them.
