Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
A hit-and-run accident occurs when a driver causes an accident and then flees the scene without leaving any contact information or providing assistance to the injured parties. According to Valuepenguin, there were 2,948 fatal hit-and-runs in California, resulting in 3,056 deaths from 2010 to 2019.
So, why are hit-and-run accidents on the rise? Cars are becoming larger and heavier, causing more damage when they collide with smaller vehicles or pedestrians. Furthermore, more people are using cell phones and other electronic devices while driving, which causes distracted driving and increases the risk of an accident. Finally, as our population grows (particularly in cities), there are more cars on the road, which means more opportunities for accidents.
Despite the dangers of hit-and-run accidents, many drivers choose to flee rather than stay and deal with the consequences. In some cases, this may be due to drunk driving or other illegal activity in which the driver attempts to avoid detection. Even sober drivers may flee if they are uninsured or do not have a valid driver’s license.
