Nine people were injured after a car struck a van carrying children, causing the van to roll over, on Interstate 8 in the Del Cerro area on Monday afternoon, October 3, 2022.
According to California Highway Patrol officials, it occurred just before 3:35 p.m. in the westbound lanes west of Lake Murray Boulevard.
The afternoon commute was disrupted by the collision, which may have been caused by a hit-and-run.
According to CHP Officer Jesse Matias, a blue Mazda collided with a white Nissan van moving west when investigating the cause.
The van was thrown up an embankment by the impact. According to Matias, it then turned over and rolled back down onto the highway.
Matias stated there were eight kids in the van, ranging in age from infant to late teen.
One of them was hurled out of the car. That individual was initially unconscious but later recovered, according to Matias. Matias did not specify the age of the child.
According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, one patient received CPR, after which several others—one in the most critical condition—were transported to Rady Children’s Hospital.
Matias further reported that everyone in the van, including the 38-year-old driver, was taken to a hospital. All but the child who was thrown had minor wounds. He suggested that the group might have been a part of a church group.
The Mazda’s 47-year-old Phoenix man driver was unharmed.
Although the cause of the collision is still unknown, it may have begun when an unidentified vehicle struck the Mazda, sending it crashing into the van.
According to information in the CHP’s online log, two cars may have been engaged in racing.
According to Matias, it’s unclear whether the unconfirmed report may have been connected to the accident.
