Big Rig Accident Statistics

The massive tractor-trailers and semis that we frequently share the road with are commonly referred to as “big rigs.” Large commercial trucks can be referred to as either of these.

Tractor-trailer collisions are far more lethal than other types of vehicle accidents. This is largely attributable to the enormous dimensions of semi-trucks and other big rigs. Having to stop a semi-truck with a heavy load takes more space.

Every 15 minutes, someone is killed in the United States because of a collision with a large truck. Roughly 500,000 transportation accidents claim the lives of Americans each year, including 5,000 truck drivers.

In California, truck accidents account for about 113 annual fatalities and nearly 3,000 yearly injuries. Between two hundred and three hundred people per year are killed in truck accidents in the Golden State of California.

Between 2009 and 2015, the most recent year for which data is available, the number of fatalities caused by accidents involving semi-trucks rose to an all-time high. Tractor-trailer accidents caused one in ten deaths on American roads in 2015.

When following a heavy truck going less than 40 mph, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommends giving yourself 4 seconds of space. A second must be added when traveling at speeds greater than forty miles per hour.

Internal Injuries

You may not be able to see your wounds right away at the scene of the accident. Many internal injuries can only be determined by a doctor. It is possible that the bleeding is internal. The lack of a doctor monitoring your blood pressure may prevent you from realizing that you are bleeding until it is too late.
