[10-12-2022] Los Angeles County, CA – Big Rig Crash Closes Northbound Interstate 5 Freeway

[10-12-2022] Big Rig Crash Closes Northbound Interstate 5 FreewayTwo big rigs collided on the northbound I-5 Freeway due to bad weather, shutting down the freeway on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.

The crash occurred around 12:24 p.m. in the San Fernando Valley’s Sylmar neighborhood.

Two big rigs were involved in a collision, and one of them jackknifed and began to leak fuel on the northbound 5 to the 14 Freeway truck lanes.

The California Highway Patrol and Caltrans were called to the scene.

Since there had been a lot of rain in the area, CHP used sand and dirt to stop fuel from draining downhill.

A hard closure was put in place at 12:49 p.m., closing the freeway from the 210 east to the northbound 5 for an undetermined amount of time.

There were no reported injuries.

Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big rigs are the common name for the massive tractor-trailers and semis we frequently share the road with. Trucks used for commercial purposes can be called either of these.

Compared to other vehicle accidents, the casualties sustained in tractor-trailer collisions are astronomically high. The massive size of semi-trucks and other big rigs is largely to blame for this. More room is needed to stop a semitrailer carrying a heavy load.

In the United States, one person is killed every 15 minutes in a truck-related accident. Nearly half a million people per year, including 5,000 truck drivers, lose their lives in transportation-related accidents in the United States.

About 113 people lose their lives and nearly 3,000 are injured every year in California due to truck accidents. Annually, truck accidents in California claim the lives of between 200 and 300 people in the Golden State.

There was a record number of deaths attributed to semi-truck accidents between 2009 and 2015, the most recent year for which data is available. One in ten deaths on U.S. roads in 2015 was the result of a collision involving a tractor-trailer.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration advises leaving 4 seconds of space when following a heavy truck going less than 40 mph. A second must be added when traveling at speeds greater than forty miles per hour.

Internal Injuries

There’s a chance you won’t be able to see the full extent of your injuries until you get home from the hospital. Oftentimes, only a medical professional can diagnose an internal injury. The bleeding could be coming from within. Without a doctor to check your blood pressure, you might not notice that you’re bleeding until it’s too late.
