Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Anyone could get hurt or even die in a collision or traffic accident. Statistics from the government show that more than 70,000 pedestrians are killed or hurt every year in the US. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that a pedestrian was killed every 1.5 hours in 2016 in a car accident.

One of the main reasons why pedestrians get hurt is because drivers aren’t paying attention. Drivers may talk on the phone, adjust the radio, or talk to other people in the car. When they do more than one thing, they are more likely to miss someone crossing the street.

As a pedestrian, you should always be aware of where you are and look for signs that a driver might not see you. It would be best if you crossed the street when the driver didn’t seem to be paying attention.

Lack of visibility is another common cause of injuries to pedestrians. This could be because it’s late at night or bad weather. If you can’t see well, likely, the driver can’t see well either.

In these situations, it’s best to stand out, so wear bright clothes to avoid getting hurt. It would be best if you also were careful when crossing the street and only do so when the driver coming toward you can see you.
