Big Rig Accident Statistics
Huge commercial trucks, known by many names, are standard on American highways. Some alternative names for this type of truck include big rig, 18-wheeler, tractor-trailer, and semi-trailer.
According to data from the United States Department of Transportation, nearly 4,000 people were killed in tractor-trailer accidents in the United States in 2015.
The number of people killed in accidents involving semi-trucks rose by an alarming 22% between 2009 and 2015. One in ten traffic fatalities in 2015 involved a tractor-trailer.
Some of the deadliest crashes on American roads and highways involve large trucks. Due to the vast size disparity between tractor-trailers and passenger cars, accidents involving big rigs tend to be more lethal than other traffic collisions.
Many factors must be taken into account when investigating accidents involving 18-wheelers. The most frequent causes of accidents involving large trucks are loss of truck control, a tire blowout, a disabling or non-disabling vehicle failure, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.
