Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

Hit-and-run accidents have increased in frequency. Since 2009, the proportion of deaths attributable to hit-and-run drivers has risen by 7 percent. Accidental deaths on the road have been rising, and hit-and-run drivers are a major cause of this trend.
Within the preceding five years, there had been an annual average of a single pedestrian accident. Only about one in twenty of these incidents ends in a fatality, but roughly half of them still result in injuries. The afternoon and early evening are peak times for these incidents.
Use crosswalks and walk against traffic to avoid danger, but drivers must also be aware of pedestrians. Always check to see if there is enough time to cross the street before the next car comes by, looking in both directions.
