Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Owing to their lack of protection, motorcyclists are at a higher risk of being killed or seriously injured in case of an accident. Still, they continue to be widely used because of their convenience and portability.

The number of licensed motorcyclists in the United States in 2012 was estimated at 8.5 million by the Department of Transportation. Among these were 5,286 motorcyclist fatalities in 2016. There were 16,505 the year before, with 541 deaths and 15,527 injuries.

California topped the list for motorcycle registrations in 2019. The number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured in accidents in the state has risen sharply in recent years.

474 people in California lost their lives in motorcycle accidents that same year. However, on average, it has dropped by 9.4 percent since 2015. Meanwhile, 34 had perished in 2018 due to not wearing a helmet, up from 28 the year before.

One cause of motorcycle crashes is rider mistakes, such as excessive speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, and making sudden lane changes. However, such fatal accidents can be prevented. Safe motorcycling behavior includes abiding by traffic regulations and always wearing protective gear like helmets.
