Fatal Train Accident Statistics

It is estimated that trains strike people or vehicles every two hours, as the National Transportation Safety Board reported. Annually, train accidents claim more than a thousand lives. Approximately 2,300 people have been injured, and 600 have died in this accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board indicates that pedestrians are more likely to die in train accidents than automobile accidents. A lack of warning systems for motorists, unsafe crossings, and outdated safety features contribute to 50 percent of all fatal train accidents.

Since 1997, more than 7,200 people have been killed in train accidents in the United States. In recent years, trains striking pedestrians have surpassed all other causes of death along American railroads.

Trains are the most efficient mode of transportation. Conductor skill and maintenance frequency are two factors that affect employee and passenger safety. Furthermore, they threaten the public by being careless or taking improper shortcuts.

Derailments, worn tracks, disregard for safety regulations, lax security, and other factors also contribute to training accidents.
