Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident Statistics

A recent analysis found that the number of hit-and-run fatalities is rising. In 2020, hit-and-run accidents were the cause of 24% of all pedestrian fatalities.

Recent studies have shown that California has the highest risk of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries compared to other states. Over 14,000 pedestrians were injured, and 893 pedestrians died in California in 2012.

Accidents involving and killing pedestrians have increased in recent years. The number of fatalities among pedestrians has been alarmingly high each year.

When a vehicle collides with another but leaves the scene without stopping to render aid, the collision is known as a hit-and-run (this includes drivers fleeing the scene on foot). In addition to the suffering and social and economic costs associated with injury crashes, hit-and-run incidents can worsen outcomes because victims are frequently delayed or do not receive medical attention.

Failure to yield to pedestrians or braking too suddenly is one of the main causes of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. It is advised that pedestrians always use sidewalks, abstain from drinking or using drugs while walking, and proceed with caution when crossing parking lots or driveways. Thus, they will be less likely to sustain injuries in these collisions.
