Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
Despite the various restrictions in place to safeguard cyclists in the United States, bicycle accidents are unfortunately common. In 2018, over 800 bicyclists were killed in the United States due to accidents. California had the highest death toll.
However, cyclists are responsible for dealing with the aftermath of accidents. The number of reported bicycle accidents decreased by 50,000 in 2015 compared to 2014. Despite fewer bicycle accidents in the United States compared to 2001, the death toll is 12 percent higher.
The National Center for Health Statistics found that 712 motorcyclists were killed by vehicles, and 377 died of unrelated causes.
Bicycle-related deaths are more common in California than in any other state. According to the National Bicycle Safety Foundation, 145 cyclists were killed and 11,116 were injured in California in 2017.
A few risks are constantly present for riders. Motorists routinely ignore the rights of cyclists by traveling dangerously close to them. This could cause serious injuries or even death.
