Big Rig Accident Statistics

Since trucks are sturdy, their drivers are safer than those in smaller cars or on foot. This is the leading cause of death for those traveling by automobile, as reported by the National Safety Council.

Every year, truck-related accidents claim the lives of more than 4,000 people in the United States. Large vehicles account for only 2% of accidents but 12% of fatalities.

There is a 55 mph speed limit for trucks on all public roads (state or federal roads) in California. There is a clear objective to reduce the number of incidents involving semis by reducing their speed limit.

According to data compiled by the California Office of Traffic Safety, there are over 28,000 truck accidents per year in the Golden State. In 2017, there were 359 deaths and 9,500 injuries.
