Big Rig Accident Statistics

Due to their vehicles’ superior durability, truck drivers have greater protection than those in less protected modes of transportation or on foot. Data from the National Safety Council shows that this is the leading cause of death for those traveling by car.

Each year, over 4,000 people in the United States are killed in accidents involving trucks. Less than 2% of accidents include a big rig, but 12% of fatalities can be attributed to one.

Trucks in California must adhere to the 55 mph speed limit that is in place on all state and federal routes. Reducing the limit speed for semis is an obvious step toward achieving the goal of reducing accidents involving these vehicles.

The California Office of Traffic Safety reports that each year there are over 28,000 truck accidents in the state. In 2017, 359 people lost their lives, while another 9,500 were injured.
