A pedestrian man walking on the freeway was hit and killed, causing some lanes to be closed in Mission Valley on Friday night, September 9, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash transpired just after 8:00 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 8 near Mission Center Road.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the pedestrian was walking within the traffic lanes when struck by a silver Nissan SUV. The pedestrian ultimately succumbed to his injuries and died.
Officer Jesse Matias of the California Highway Patrol stated that the SUV’s driver, a 25-year-old woman from San Diego, remained at the scene following the collision.
Investigations are still being conducted to determine what caused the collision and whether or not alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Anyone who has ever driven in a city knows that people walking can cause a lot of traffic. They dart out into traffic, cross streets without looking, and make it hard for drivers to get around. Thousands of people are hurt or killed every year when they are walking.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that in 2016, more than 5900 pedestrians died in the United States. Accidents involving pedestrians are more likely to end in death than other accidents because pedestrians don’t have as much protection as people in cars.
There are many reasons why pedestrian accidents happen, but one of the most common is that a driver is not paying attention. Even for a few seconds, drivers put pedestrians in danger when they take their eyes off the road. Also, accidents involving pedestrians are more likely to happen at night or in places with insufficient lighting. This is because drivers have trouble seeing people on the street, especially if they are wearing dark clothes.
To avoid hitting pedestrians, drivers must keep their eyes on the road and be aware of what’s happening around them. Always cross the street at marked crosswalks, pay attention to traffic lights, and look both ways before you travel. By doing these easy things, everyone can help lower the risk of accidents involving pedestrians.
San Diego County Pedestrian Accident Lawyers
Accidents involving pedestrians often cause serious injuries or even death to those who are hurt or killed. In pedestrian accidents, people often get injured in the head or other ways that make them unable to move.
Vehicles have much more weight and force than people on foot, so if they collide, the person on foot gets poorly hurt, not the car. Bicyclists are even safer than pedestrians because they can wear helmets and other protective gear.
When cars hit pedestrians, the injuries can be terrible, and the costs of medical care and lost wages can be very high. The insurance company or the person who caused the accident may try to force you to give a recorded statement that can be used against you in the future to dispute liability or your damages and lower their liability.
You might think you have to do everything they tell you to do. But don’t take the insurance company’s word for it. You need someone in your corner to give you advice and fight for you.
