Pedestrian Accident Statistics
When a car or motorcycle hits a person walking, this is a pedestrian accident. Pedestrian accidents are often worse than car accidents between two cars because the person on foot is completely exposed.
A recent survey found that 44 people died on foot, on a motorcycle, in a car, or on a bicycle in San Diego in 2019. In 2016, San Diego had the sixth most pedestrian deaths in the United States.
Between 2008 and 2017, 14% of road deaths in the U.S. were caused by pedestrians. In California, the number was 22%. In 2018, 893 people who were walking were killed on California streets. This is a 26% increase from the year before.
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on pedestrian deaths in 2017, the most common reasons for pedestrian accidents are failing to yield the right of way, crossing a street or intersection in the wrong way, standing, lying down, playing, or working on a highway.
