Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Walking around Greater Los Angeles and other busy parts of Southern California is one of the riskiest activities you can engage in. Roads are congested with automobiles, trucks, and buses, and it appears that most drivers are too preoccupied with their phones, in a hurry, or tired to be cautious and prevent crashes with pedestrians. What’s more unfortunate is when a motorist leaves you helpless after a crash.
According to the California Highway Patrol, about 4,000 individuals are killed or injured annually in hit-and-runs. Pedestrians account for almost 60% of all hit-and-run accident victims, while hit-and-run drivers are involved in nearly 20% of all pedestrian deaths.
According to the data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 24% of 6,516 pedestrian fatalities in 2020 occurred in hit-and-run crashes.
Hit-and-run accidents often lessen the chances of victims surviving. Thus, it is important to always be mindful of your safety. One of the most essential things you can do to be safe is to keep an eye out for yourself and to think that every motorist is a potential offender.
Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Accident Lawyers
When parties are engaged in a collision in California, they are obligated by law to remain at the scene of the accident and wait for the authorities or another agency to come. However, not all drivers obey the law, and some just flee the collision scene, resulting in a “hit-and-run” accident.
A hit-and-run is determined by the offender’s leaving the crime scene. Aside from potential felony charges against the person who caused and left the accident, he must also pay damages to the victims.
Claims for damages differ based on the circumstances of the accident. A well-present claim will enable the victim to recover the maximum compensation to which he/she is entitled. Retaining legal counsel is key to making it possible.
