Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

A hit-and-run accident occurs when one or more motorists collide, and at least one flees the accident scene. Leaving the situation without obtaining the necessary assistance worsens the condition of those harmed.

According to ValuePenguin data, fatal hit-and-runs increased from 1,342 in 2010 to 1,939 in 2019. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of people killed in hit-and-run incidents increased by 60% over the previous decade, reaching 337 in 2016.

There are many reasons drivers may choose to flee the scene of an accident. Some may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and fear being arrested. Others may simply be afraid of being held responsible for the damage they have caused. Whatever the reason, hit-and-run accidents are unacceptable. Drivers who flee the scene of an accident are not only breaking the law but also putting innocent lives at risk.
