Big Rig Accident Statistics

Without commercial vehicles like semi-trucks, the economy can’t work. Every year, the trucking industry in the United States moves goods worth billions of dollars. Other drivers are more likely to get into accidents when there are a lot of semi-trucks on the road.

More people die in semi-truck accidents than in any other car accident. Big rigs are big, so it’s hard for other vehicles to get around them.

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the number of deaths caused by big rig trucks has increased by 30% since 2009. In 2017, about 4,102 people died in traffic accidents caused by big rig drivers who weren’t paying attention.

Most people in California die or get hurt in accidents involving commercial trucks. In 2019, 3,316 deadly car accidents killed a total of 3,606 people. Forty-four people died in more than 300 accidents involving heavy-duty trucks.

To avoid being struck by a passing commercial truck, keep as far away from the truck’s blind spot as you can. The riskiest option is to sit on the truck’s passenger side, which has a larger blind spot than the driver’s. The only place to pass when changing lanes is on the driver’s side.
