Motorcycle Accident Statistics

When motorcycles crash, they often cause severe injuries and, in rare cases, death. Motorcycle riders are very vulnerable to impacts and could die or be seriously hurt if they are in one. Motorcycle riders face obvious daily risks, such as head and brain injuries, road rash, and getting a tattoo from a crash.

In 2019, more motorcycles were registered in California than in any other state. In California, the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by motorcycle accidents has increased steadily.

The US Department of Transportation says there were about 8.5 million registered motorcycles on US roads in 2012. People like motorcycles because they are fun and give them freedom. They are also portable and cheaper than cars.

When a motorcycle is involved, the outcome could be fatal. In the US in 2016, there were 5,286 motorcycle deaths.

The year before, 16,505 motorcycle accidents killed 541 people and hurt 15,527 others.

But the number of people who die in motorcycle accidents can be reduced. People tell people who ride motorcycles that they should always wear the right clothes and a helmet.
