Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Every year, thousands of people are killed in hit-and-run accidents. This statistic is particularly alarming because it would be relatively easy to prevent such tragedies.
The consequences of a fatal hit-and-run accident can be severe because roads are dangerous places. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration forecasted 2,300 fatal hit-and-run incidents in 2016.
This amount has essentially not changed in recent years. Even though this number accounts for less than 1% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents, thousands of people still pass away each year.
On average, men make up 81% of the injured in fatal hit-and-run accidents at 41 years old, while women make up only 19% of the wounded. The most frequent causes of death for these victims are internal bleeding (21% of the time), blunt force trauma (37% of the time), and brain injuries (16%).
Making our communities safer for everyone—especially the most vulnerable—will help us prevent these accidents.
