DUI Accident Statistics
Reports indicated that out of 10,142 deaths caused by drunk driving in the United States in 2019, 949 occurred in the state of California. That equated to 2.4 cases per every 100,000 people (3.1 for the National rate). Drunk driving was a factor in 26.3 percent of all road fatalities in the state (and 28.1 percent nationwide).
While another study found that drunk driving decreased during the 1980s, it found that the number of individuals who died in incidents involving intoxicated drivers had increased. Despite this shift, millions of impaired motorists continue to pose a threat on the road every year.
In the state of California, it is against the law to have a BAC or Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.08 or above. Drunk drivers pose a threat to other drivers and pedestrians because they are less able to regulate their actions while behind the wheel.
