A motorcyclist was killed in a vehicle collision in Modesto, Stanislaus County, on Saturday evening, February 11, 2023.
According to the Modesto Police Department, the fatal crash occurred at night at the Coffee Road and Spanos Court intersection.
The motorcycle rider was reportedly traveling north on Coffee Road while a sedan was southbound. The rider made a left turn onto Spanos Court and into the path of the oncoming sedan, getting struck by it.
The rider was declared dead on the spot. Although the authorities did not release his identity, he was reportedly a 28-year-old Modesto resident.
The sedan’s driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with law enforcement as further investigation continued.
Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
In 2020, motorcyclists were responsible for 14% of all road fatalities, 18% of all occupant deaths, and 4% of all occupant injuries, according to data from the National Safety Council. They accounted for less than 3% of registered drivers and less than 0.6% of all vehicle miles traveled. If helmets had been utilized, the number would have been fewer.
The mortality toll increased 11% between 2019 and 2020, with a corresponding 23% increase in the death rate per 100,000,000 kilometers traveled. Over a decade, the death toll and death rate increased by around 20% and 27%, respectively. Current fatality rates are as follows: 5 579 per 100,000,000 kilometers traveled (a rate of 31.64).
In the year 2020, California was home to approximately 785 thousand motorcycles. It is one of the two deadliest states in the country for motorcyclists, with an annual death toll of around 500. In about 6% of these cases, the rider’s lack of head protection was the direct cause of death.
