A big rig crash claimed the life of two people in Los Angeles early Friday morning, February 16, 2023.
According to authorities, the collision occurred around 5:00 a.m. at the 170 Freeway interchange in Sun Valley.
Reports indicated that a big rig collided with a white van stalled in the lanes, causing a fire. Firefighters responded and extinguished the flames.
It was unclear whether the victims were in the semi-truck or the van. They have not been identified right away.
Traffic on the southbound 5 Freeway was backed up for miles as crews worked to remove the van’s charred wreckage. Morning commuters were being diverted onto the 170 Freeway southbound.
At this time, it is unclear when the lanes will reopen.
Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics
In 2015, approximately 4,000 tractor-trailer accidents were fatal, according to the US Department of Transportation.
The percentage of fatalities in semi-truck collisions increased by a startling 22% between 2009 and 2015. In 2015, one out of every ten road fatalities involved a tractor-trailer.
Highways in the United States are filled with enormous commercial trucks, often called “big rigs.”. This truck is also referred to as a big rig, 18-wheeler, tractor-trailer, or semi-trailer.
Some of the deadliest collisions on American highways and roads involve large trucks. Because of the significant size difference between tractor-trailers and passenger automobiles, accidents involving large rigs usually result in more fatalities than other traffic collisions.
When investigating 18-wheeler accidents, several factors must be considered. Loss of truck control, tire blowouts, incapacitating or non-capacitating vehicle problems, excessive speed, lane drifting, inappropriate truck maneuvering, and driver awareness are the most common causes of significant truck accidents.
