Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Based on a Governors Highway Safety Association study, 7,485 pedestrians died from car accidents in 2021, the highest number in forty years.
Speeding caused pedestrian deaths to increase from 7.2% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2020. Pedestrian safety is significantly impacted by speed, and the risk of pedestrian death increases exponentially from 10% at 23 to 90% at 58 mph.
When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, they usually sustain injuries. In car-pedestrian collisions, pedestrians are more likely to suffer serious injuries.
Pedestrians are often injured or killed because drivers suddenly fail to yield to pedestrians or brake.
Pedestrians should always use sidewalks, avoid alcohol and drugs, and cross parking lots and driveways cautiously. Consequently, there is less chance of them being injured in these encounters.
What You Should Do After a Pedestrian Accident
Ensure the police are notified, and a report is filed. If you are questioned at the scene of an accident, be honest about what you saw and experienced. Refrain from assuming anything about situations you don’t fully understand when you speak. In the aftermath of an accident, victims are likely to apologize profusely, even if they did not cause the accident. Insurers may use this act of kindness to deny your claim as evidence that you admitted fault.
