What To Do After A Car Accident

Car accidents are unforeseeable, but they can be avoided. Keep a checklist in your car’s glove box to stay calm after an accident. It can advise you on what to avoid and how to protect your rights. You can use the following guidelines:

  • Maintain your calm and avoid admitting fault. Stay where you are to ensure that no one is harmed. You should check yourself for injuries before helping others.
  • To report your collision, dial 911. Call the police unless the accident was minor, with no injuries or property damage. Police interview witnesses, collect evidence, and compile a report on the incident.
  • Exchange information with all parties involved. Make a detailed record of the incident, including the weather, road conditions, and any injuries you suffered.
  • Do not admit fault, even to the police. Give the officer an honest account of what happened.
  • Seek medical attention. As soon as possible, consult a specialist or your primary care physician. Receiving immediate medical attention can reduce the severity of injuries.
  • Inform your insurance company. California insurance companies have different accident reporting deadlines.
  • Contact insurance adjusters. You can contact a claims adjuster, but ensure you provide them with all the necessary information. You should not accept a settlement offer or agree to a recorded statement from an insurance company unless you have first consulted an attorney.
  • Make a document. Gather and file all paperwork related to the incident in a case file. This includes the police report, medical bills, and injury treatment plans.
  • Seek immediate legal advice from an experienced California car accident attorney.
