What to Do After a Car Accident

No one can foresee automobile crashes, but it is always best to be prepared for them. This car accident checklist can help you determine what to do and, most importantly, what not to do during such events. Follow the list below:

  • Check yourself first before checking anyone else, and remain at the scene.
  • Call 911 immediately to report the accident. Authorities will collect evidence, take statements, and compile a report regarding the incident.
  • Wait for the police in a safe location. If possible, move all damaged vehicles to the side of the road.
  • Get in touch with a doctor as soon as possible. The severity of an injury can be mitigated if medical attention is sought immediately.
  • Exchange information with all parties involved. Take pictures of everything from your injuries to the weather, road conditions, and all vehicles involved.
  • Compile all paperwork related to the incident, such as the police report, medical bills, and plans for treating any injuries.
  • Report to your insurance company. California’s statute of limitations for reporting an accident to your insurer varies by company.
  • Speak to insurance adjusters. Refrain from sharing more information than is necessary. Do not give an insurance company a recorded statement or accept a settlement offer before speaking with an attorney.
  • Seek legal counsel from a reputable California car accident lawyer.
