Steps to Take After a Car Accident in Mono County

While you can’t predict a car accident, you can be prepared. Keeping a car accident checklist in your glove box can help you stay organized and calm if an accident occurs. This guide can tell you what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You’re not alone after an accident, whether minor or severe.

Here’s what to do following a car accident:

  1. Remain Calm – Stay at the scene and ensure everyone is safe. Check yourself for injuries first, then others. Stay calm and try to maintain your composure.
  2. Move to Safety – If possible, move your vehicle to the side of the road and turn on your emergency flashers to alert other drivers. Wait for the police in a safe location.
  3. Call 911 – Report the accident to the authorities immediately. The police will document the incident and collect information, which becomes part of the official record.
  4. Exchange Information – Share names, phone numbers, and insurance details with the other driver(s) involved. If you can, take photos of the vehicles, license plates, and other important details.
  5. Avoid Admitting Fault – Stick to the facts when speaking with the police. Do not admit fault or apologize, as this can be used against you.
  6. Seek Medical Attention – Visit the hospital or your primary doctor immediately. Immediate medical care can help identify and treat injuries that may not show symptoms immediately.
  7. Notify Your Insurance Company – California insurers have time limits for reporting accidents. Contact your insurer promptly and follow their instructions.
  8. Talk to Insurance Adjusters – You may receive a call from the other party’s insurance company. Provide only necessary information and do not record a statement or accept a settlement offer without consulting an attorney.
  9. Organize Your Documents – Keep all accident-related documents together, including the police report, medical bills, the other driver’s information, and treatment plans.
