Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents remain a pressing public safety concern, with fatalities on the rise. According to a 2023 report by the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center, an average of 20 pedestrians were killed daily in motor vehicle crashes across the U.S. in 2021, totaling 7,388 deaths and accounting for 17% of all traffic fatalities that year.
While California saw fewer pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023, the state’s per capita fatality rate remained higher than the national average, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). From January to June 2024, 439 pedestrians died, marking a 13% decline from 504 deaths in early 2023, which is the lowest first-half total since 2019. However, the state still recorded 1.1 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents, exceeding the national average of 0.97 per 100,000.
GHSA also found that pedestrian deaths have increased nearly seven times faster than population growth over the past decade. Urban areas remain the most hazardous, with most fatalities occurring on high-traffic arterial roads. These alarming trends emphasize the urgent need for improved infrastructure, enhanced visibility, and stronger pedestrian safety initiatives.
