Car Accident Statistics

During the first half of 2023, an estimated 19,515 people died in car crashes nationwide, a 3.3 percent decrease from the 20,190 deaths reported in the same period in 2022. This marked the fifth consecutive decline in traffic fatalities.

Although drivers traveled 35.1 billion more miles in 2023, the fatality rate still improved. There were about 1.24 deaths for every 100 million miles driven, down from the projected rate of 1.31. These figures suggest that road safety is improving even as travel increases.
