Bicycle Accident Statistics
Each year, close to 1,000 bicyclists lose their lives in crashes involving motor vehicles on roads across the United States. In addition to these deaths, about 120,000 people are treated in emergency rooms every year for non-fatal bicycle crash injuries.
Although bicycle trips only make up around 1 percent of all travel in the country, bicyclists represent 2 to 3 percent of all traffic deaths involving a motor vehicle. This shows that while biking is a small part of overall travel, it carries a higher risk of serious injury or death compared to other types of transportation.
