Motorcycle Accident Statistics
In 2021, a total of 5,932 motorcyclists were killed in crashes across the United States, marking a concerning statistic for road safety. In California, 565 motorcyclists tragically lost their lives that year, contributing to the overall national figures.
The rise in fatalities was significant nationwide, with a 7.7 percent increase in motorcycle deaths from 2020 to 2021. This surge highlights the growing dangers for motorcyclists on U.S. roads. In contrast, California experienced a smaller rise, with a 2.9 percent increase in motorcyclist deaths during the same period. Despite the smaller increase in California, it still reflects a need for better safety measures for riders in the state.
Motorcycle accidents account for a disproportionate share of traffic fatalities, especially considering motorcycles make up only a small percentage of all vehicles on the road. These accidents tend to be more severe due to the lack of protection for riders compared to those inside enclosed vehicles.
