Car Accident Statistics

In 2023, about 44,762 people died in motor vehicle crashes across the United States, a 3 percent decrease from 2022. This continues a downward trend following a 2 percent decline from 2021 to 2022, after a 20 percent increase in traffic deaths between 2019 and 2021.

Over the long term, traffic fatality rates have improved significantly. In 1913, there were roughly 4,200 deaths among 1.3 million vehicles, or 33 deaths per 10,000 vehicles. By 2023, there were 285 million vehicles, but the fatality rate had fallen to just 1.57 deaths per 10,000 vehicles, a 95 percent reduction.

Even as more people drove in 2023, the risk of dying in a crash went down. Total miles driven rose 1.6 percent, registered vehicles increased 0.4 percent, and the population grew 0.5 percent. Despite these increases, fatalities per mile, per vehicle, and per person all declined, with the mileage death rate dropping 4.2 percent, the vehicle death rate falling 3.1 percent, and the population-based death rate decreasing 3.2 percent.

Nonfatal injuries remain a major concern. In 2022, an estimated 5.1 million people were injured in crashes, with an economic cost of $513.8 billion, including medical bills, lost income, and property damage.
