[09-13-2025] Sacramento County, CA – Driver Killed After Pick-Up Truck Struck by Big Rig on Northbound Interstate 5 North of Sutterville Road

A driver was killed when his pick-up truck was struck by a big rig in Sacramento on Saturday morning, September 13, 2025.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:00 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 north of Sutterville Road.

The pick-up truck, traveling in the #3 lane, lost a tire and became disabled. A tractor-trailer towing two trailers, traveling in the same lane, struck the pick-up. Both vehicles caught fire. First responders found the pick-up truck driver deceased at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. CHP reported that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash. The identity of the pick-up truck driver has not been released.

Authorities continue to investigate the collision.

Compared to 2020, deaths rose by 17 percent. Most fatalities were people in other vehicles, making up 72 percent of all deaths, or 4,149 people. Truck occupants accounted for 17 percent, or 1,008 deaths, while 11 percent, or 631 deaths, were pedestrians, bicyclists, or others outside vehicles.

Injuries also increased during the same period, rising 9 percent from about 141,613 in 2020 to 154,993 in 2021. Passengers in other vehicles made up most injuries at 71 percent, or 109,981 people. Truck drivers and passengers represented 27 percent, or 42,164 injuries, and nonoccupants like pedestrians accounted for 2 percent, or 2,848 injuries.
