Car Accident Statistics

In 2023, an estimated 44,762 people died in motor vehicle crashes across the United States, a 3 percent decrease from 2022. This follows a 2 percent drop from 2021 to 2022, after traffic fatalities rose sharply by 20 percent between 2019 and 2021.

Looking at the long-term trend, traffic safety has improved substantially. In 1913, about 4,200 people died among 1.3 million registered vehicles, equaling 33 deaths per 10,000 vehicles. By 2023, with approximately 285 million vehicles on U.S. roads, the fatality rate had fallen to roughly 1.57 deaths per 10,000 vehicles, a 95 percent reduction.

Even with more drivers on the road in 2023, the risk of death per mile, per vehicle, and per person all declined. Vehicle miles traveled rose 1.6 percent, registered vehicles increased 0.4 percent, and the population grew 0.5 percent. The death rate per mile dropped 4.2 percent, per vehicle fell 3.1 percent, and per population decreased 3.2 percent.

Nonfatal injuries remain a significant concern. In 2022, around 5.1 million people were injured in motor vehicle crashes, resulting in an estimated $513.8 billion in economic costs, including medical bills, lost income, and property damage.
