Pedestrian Accident Statistics
In 2023, about 7,314 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic accidents across the U.S., making up roughly 18 percent of all traffic-related deaths. This marks a sharp increase from 2009, which was a low point for pedestrian fatalities, with numbers climbing nearly 80 percent since then.
Hit-and-run crashes continue to be a major safety issue. Last year, one out of every four pedestrian deaths involved a driver leaving the scene. Between 2014 and 2019, hit-and-run incidents accounted for around 20 percent of pedestrian deaths. That share rose to 24 percent in 2020 and has gradually increased to 25 percent in recent years.
Looking at trends over several decades, death rates have generally fallen for most age groups. Children under 13 have seen the most dramatic drop, with a 93 percent decline in fatalities from 1975 to 2023. Teenagers ages 13 to 19 experienced a 71 percent reduction, while adults 70 and older saw a 73 percent decrease. The only group with a rising rate is adults between 20 and 44, who have seen a 6 percent increase. Since 2009, adult fatality rates have kept climbing, whereas rates for children and teens have continued to decline.
