DUI Accident Statistics

Alcohol-impaired driving remains a leading cause of fatal and serious injury crashes on California roads. In 2023, about 1,355 people died in alcohol-related crashes, a 4.5% decrease from 2022, though this still represents nearly a 55% increase compared with 2014.

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) supports programs that follow the Safe System framework. This approach acknowledges that crashes can happen but focuses on preventing them from resulting in death or serious injury. By addressing multiple risk factors and applying several layers of protection, OTS aims to improve safety for all road users across the state.
