Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The NHTSA report says that every two hours, a pedestrian is killed by a car. Also, every 8 minutes, a car accident hurts a pedestrian.
In the United States, about 110,000 pedestrians are hurt every year. The NHTSA also says that about 6,227 pedestrians died in 2018, which is about 250 more than the year before.
In California, accidents happen every year that hurt and kill a number of people who are walking. Many of these accidents involving pedestrians are caused by drivers who aren’t paying attention, speed, drive while drunk, drive recklessly, drive the wrong way, or don’t follow traffic rules.
To avoid getting hit by a car, pedestrians should always follow safety rules. There’s no way to know for sure that an accident won’t happen, but if you follow safety rules, it’s much less likely that you’ll be held responsible if one does.
But pedestrians can still get into accidents, even if they are careful and follow all the rules. It’s harder to be a defensive pedestrian than a defensive driver. When a driver is going too fast, it is much harder for people on foot to get out of the way.
