Motorcycle Accident Statistics

The Insurance Information Institute has published some alarming figures about the severity of motorcycle accidents in the United States. Over 5,000 individuals were killed in motorcycle accidents in 2018.

So, what is it about riding a motorcycle that makes it so dangerous? A lot of factors contribute to this perilously high fatality rate. The main concern is a lack of security.

Despite a 5% decrease from 2017, motorcycle riders were still 27 times more likely to die in a car accident per mile traveled than passenger vehicle occupants.

Motorcycle accidents happen for a variety of causes. Even if the driver was riding at a low speed, making a sharp turn too quickly and hitting the gravel can result in minor injuries. Poor road conditions and vehicle failure can cause many motorcycle accidents at higher speeds.

Motorcycle riders must always adhere to the posted speed limit. Traveling at the posted speed limit can be dangerous due to road conditions. Slow down in the rain, snow, sleet, hail, or other conditions that reduce visibility or make the road slick.

Motorcycle riders should also wear proper safety equipment. Riders should always wear a helmet that fits properly and riding boots, gloves, and leathers. When you buy from a store, you can be sure that your gear is a good fit for you. A manufacturer’s warranty will also cover you. These safeguards may not apply to equipment purchased online or through resale.
