Train Accident Statistics
People and goods can travel quickly and easily by train. The safety of passengers and non-passengers alike is dependent on the conductors’ abilities, appropriate maintenance, and other factors. These people might cut corners or engage in careless behavior, leading to injury.
It is estimated that in the United States, a train strikes at least one person or vehicle every two hours. Train accidents claim the lives of more than 1,000 people every year. Around 2,300 people were hurt, and 600 people died as a result of these accidents.
Inadequate safety equipment or safety measures to warn unwary motorists occur more than half of all fatal train accidents at train crossings without active safety technology.
Pedestrian train fatalities outnumber motorist train fatalities — a fact that many people find surprising.
Since 1997, approximately 7,200 pedestrians in the United States have died as a result of train accidents. In the United States, train-pedestrian collisions are now the leading cause of fatalities on the country’s railroads.
