Train Accident Statistics

Trains are an efficient mode of transportation for people or goods. Commuter trains, freight trains, and other types of transportation rely on conductor abilities, appropriate maintenance, and other factors to keep passengers—and nonpassengers—safe. Unfortunately, they may cut corners or engage in other careless behavior that causes individuals to be injured.

According to the National Transportation Safety Bureau, at least one person or a vehicle is hit by a train every two hours in the United States. Every year, over 1,000 individuals are killed in train accidents. Due to these mishaps, around 2,300 people were injured, and 600 died.

More than half of all fatal train accidents occur at train crossings that lack active safety technology, inadequate safety equipment, or no safety measures to warn unsuspecting motorists.

Many people are surprised to learn that the number of pedestrians killed by trains outnumbers the number of motorists killed by trains.

In the United States, approximately 7,200 pedestrians have died due to train accidents since 1997. Pedestrian railroad accidents are now among the leading causes of death on American railroads.
