Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

A motorcycle rider is 35 times more likely to die in an accident and is 16 times more likely to suffer an injury.

In Los Angeles, riding a motorcycle is a fantastic way to take advantage of the pleasant climate. Riders don’t have to be concerned about the weather changing with the seasons because of our temperate climate. As long as there isn’t too much precipitation, such as rain, snow, or ice, motorcycle riding is possible all year.

As a result, there are frequently many motorcycles on the road. This may be a recipe for disaster, given the notoriously congested streets of Los Angeles. Motorcycle accidents are more likely to happen in heavy traffic.

Over 200 accidents occurred annually between 2014 and 2018, with 235 accidents on average. These statistics show that 255 motorcycle accidents occur in Los Angeles each year.

In 2019, 5,014 motorcycle fatalities were reported by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Since the early 1980s, motorcycle fatalities had declined; however, in 1998, they started to rise again and stayed that way until 2008.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car passengers are 16 times more likely than motorcycle riders to be hurt or killed in an accident (NHTSA).

Nearly 70% of all traffic collisions are caused by drivers who fail to notice a motorcycle at an intersection. Lack of visibility from other cars is a common factor in motorcycle accidents.

However, a fatal motorcycle accident is preventable. Studies show that wearing a helmet lowers the risk of severe head injuries. Motorcycle helmet use has the potential to save 37% of lives.
