Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

A vehicle used or maintained for the purpose of transporting people for hire, payment, or profit is referred to as a “commercial vehicle” in the State of California, as is a vehicle that is primarily intended for the transportation of property. The term “commercial vehicle” refers to ambulances.

There are about 6,500 accidents involving ambulances each year. In 35% of the incidents, there was at least one injury or fatality among the passengers of a vehicle that was involved. Typically, each collision results in three different injuries.

33 fatalities are caused each year by 29 fatal ambulance incidents.

Most accidents and fatalities occurred at intersections and during times of emergency. The majority of injuries were sustained by individuals who were not in the ambulance. Injury was more likely to occur to passengers in the back compartment than the front. These collisions are caused by a variety of factors, including driver fatigue, drunk driving, and distracted driving.

Provide enough space for the ambulance to maneuver when it is nearby. More space is required for safe turns as a vehicle gets bigger. Always pay attention to the turn signals on commercial vehicles, and slow down to give them the room they require to make lane changes or turns.
