An unidentified man was killed after a fatal pedestrian accident in central Fresno on Monday night, April 26.
The deadly accident took place in the area of Willow Avenue and Olive Avenues at approximately 11:00 p.m.
The victim was reportedly using his walker while crossing the street but was suddenly struck by a passing vehicle.
The victim was not on a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center. Unfortunately, the victim later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The driver that struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and willingly cooperated with the police. Drugs and alcohol were not considered as factors in the accident. The case is currently under further investigation.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents often lead to severe injuries and even death to those who are unlucky enough to be involved in such an accident.
This fact is not surprising when the weight of the average passenger vehicle is compared to the weight of a pedestrian. Vehicles have much more weight and force than pedestrians, and in the event of a collision, it is the pedestrian, and not the vehicle, that will be severely injured.
Pedestrians currently make up a large percentage of traffic fatalities in the past 33 years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased by 27 percent from 2007-2016, while other traffic-related deaths decreased by 14 percent.
Some common reasons for pedestrian accidents are negligent driving, speeding, and drivers failing to yield to pedestrians.
