A 23-year-old woman identified as Helen Vaughan was killed after getting struck by a vehicle in Chula Vista on Monday morning, September 14.
According to the initial reports from local authorities, the deadly accident transpired in the 400 blocks of Broadway. The victim was found lying on the roadway with significant injuries. How the accident occurred, and the reason why it happened is currently unclear. The vehicle that struck the victim fled the scene.
The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene. Local authorities suspect that a pickup truck with front end damage may have been responsible for the fatal accident.
Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Investigation is Underway
It is apparent in this case that the liability falls on the hit-and-run driver for leaving the victim wounded and fleeing the scene. The suspect will most likely face criminal charges once caught. Regardless of whether the pedestrian was walking on a marked crosswalk or not, the driver always must yield any incoming pedestrians in their way.
Unfortunately, around one in five pedestrian accidents are caused by hit-and-run drivers. Sixty percent of people killed in hit-and-run accidents are pedestrians. Common reasons why hit-and-run drivers flee the scene are intoxication, driving without a license, and fear of getting arrested if they remained.
When facing cases like this, it’s vital to have an experienced San Diego County wrongful death attorney specializing in fatal pedestrian hit-and-run accidents to conduct an independent investigation. Attorneys have the resources that can help them prove the negligence of the liable party. They can re-interview important witnesses, review relevant surveillance footage from the scene, and obtain the responsible party’s phone and texting records.
