An unidentified 77-year-old woman was killed after her bicycle was struck by a passing vehicle in Davis on Wednesday morning, September 30.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s initial reports, the accident occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. on County Road 100A near North County Davis Farms Road. A Ford Focus struck the women’s bicycle while cycling off a private road onto County Road 100A.
The Ford driver attempted to stop and veered left but failed to avoid the bicyclist completely. The front of his vehicle hit the bicycle. Additional details about the accident are limited at the moment.
Fatal Bicycle Accident Investigation is Underway
The crash is currently under the investigation of local authorities. Although various laws protect bicyclists in the U.S., bicycle accident fatalities are still an inevitable occurrence. Around 800 bicyclists died in the U.S. in 2018. California leads the nation in the number of bicycling crash deaths per year.
The majority of these crashes occur in urban areas, where cars and bicycles interact most often. Cars striking bicycles is the number one cause of bicyclist injuries and deaths throughout the state. In many of these cases, the driver failed to yield the right of way, didn’t check for bikes before pulling out, ran a stop sign or red light, or wasn’t paying attention while driving. Texting and driving, drunk driving, and careless driving can all lead to a bicycle collision. Sadly, motor vehicle drivers often escape unharmed while the bicyclist suffers from fatal injuries.
